How to Care for Your Skin After a Procedure

Learn what skin may need after an aesthetic procedure, how to keep a recovery routine simple, and when to follow your provider’s specific instructions.

Gentle skincare products for a post-procedure routine

There is a moment after a procedure when your skin feels unfamiliar. Tight, perhaps. Sensitive. Flushed. For some people, that feels alarming. It should not. What you are feeling is your skin doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Understanding what is happening beneath the surface, and why it matters for how you care for your skin in the days and weeks that follow, is the difference between a recovery that goes smoothly and one that does not.

The first 72 hours

In the immediate aftermath of any procedure, your skin is in repair mode. Inflammation is not a complication. It is the first stage of healing. The body is directing blood flow and cellular activity to the treated area, beginning the work of rebuilding.

The most important thing you can do in this window is very little. Gentle cleansing, minimal product contact, and consistent SPF if you are going outside. This is not the time for actives.

Avoid anything with retinol, exfoliating acids, or vitamin C during this phase. The skin barrier is compromised and these ingredients, however effective in a normal routine, will do more harm than good right now.

The first two weeks

Swelling subsides. Redness settles. Skin texture starts to normalise. This is when the real work of recovery begins — the cellular turnover that will eventually deliver the results you came for.

Support your barrier. A quality moisturiser with ceramides or peptides applied consistently will do more for your recovery at this stage than anything more complex. The goal is to hold moisture, reduce water loss, and give the skin a stable environment to repair.

Resist the temptation to add products back into your routine too quickly. Your clinical team will tell you when your skin is ready.

Moving into maintenance

Once the acute recovery phase is complete, the focus shifts from healing to protecting what has been achieved. This is where a considered routine matters most.

SPF every day, without exception. UV exposure is one of the fastest ways to undermine results, particularly in the months following a resurfacing or laser treatment.

Work with your clinical team to identify the right products for your skin at this stage. What you need six weeks post-procedure is different from what you needed in the first week, and different again from what your long-term maintenance routine should look like.

One final note

The products you use in the months after a procedure are as much a part of your investment as the procedure itself. Choosing the right ones, used in the right order at the right time, will protect and extend what has been achieved.
