Marini Skin Solutions - Luminate XC

Marini Luminate Face Lotion is a patented non-hydroquinone brightening treatment that combines several brightening technologies rather than relying on a single agent. It includes nonapeptide-1, turmeric extract, alpha arbutin, hexylresorcinol, concentrated licorice root extract, all-trans-retinol, green tea extract, and bisabolol.

Addressing pigment through multiple pathways at once is what makes it effective on the mixed discoloration most patients have. The inclusion of all-trans-retinol also means it works on fine lines and texture alongside tone, which most brightening products do not.

In a published split-face study comparing it with 4% hydroquinone, Luminate showed superior improvement in discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines and wrinkles, with statistically significant improvement after four weeks and significantly higher consumer preference. 1. Apply to clean, dry skin.
2. Use a small amount across the whole face rather than spot-treating. Diffuse pigment responds better to full-face application.
3. Start once daily in the evening. Build to twice daily as tolerated.
4. Follow with moisturizer, and a broad spectrum sunscreen every morning.
5. Give it at least 12 weeks before assessing results.

The formula contains retinol, so it is not for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Use a tinted mineral sunscreen if you are treating melasma.

Hydroquinone has been the reference standard for pigment for decades, and it works. Its limitations are that it cannot be used continuously, and a proportion of patients cannot tolerate it. A non-hydroquinone formula with published head-to-head data behind it is therefore genuinely useful.

Two cautions. The retinol makes it unsuitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
